Research Interests focus primarily on infectious diseases in the emergency department. Dr. Moran is co-investigator for the EMERGEncy ID Net, a nationwide network of emergency departments funded through a cooperative agreement grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to study emerging infectious diseases. He is also Co-principal investigator on an NIH sponsored multi-center study of off-patent oral antibiotics for the treatment of MRSA skin and soft tissue infections. Areas of study include MRSA skin and soft tissue infections, MRSA as a cause of community-acquired pneumonia, impact of antimicrobial resistance on outcomes in urinary tract infections, infection control for MRSA and tuberculosis, rabies prophylaxis for animal bites, and C. difficile as a cause of community-acquired diarrhea. Dr. Moran is also involved in several clinical trials in the emergency department, including antimicrobials for skin and soft tissue infections, community-acquired pneumonia, and newer diagnostic tests for identifying the etiology of skin and soft tissue infections and early identification of sepsis.
